The Third Time’s the Charm: Dr. Mark Fleckner Named "Top Doctor" In Three Consumer Guides this Year

Mark Fleckner, MD, a Garden City ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the retina, has been named on Newsday’s list of “Top Doctors on Long Island” for 2017. Physicians who make the list are chosen from among those designated by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a healthcare research and information company that seeks to help guide consumers to the nation’s best doctors. Dr. Fleckner was selected as a top doctor by Castle Connolly earlier this year.

In addition to his "Top Doctor" recognition, Dr. Fleckner was recently named to "Super Doctors," a directory of outstanding physicians in various medical specialties published by MSP Communications. The list appears online and also came out in a special insert in The New York Times in May. Potential candidates are evaluated based on various indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement, including years of experience, hospital appointments, fellowships and professional activities, according to the publisher.

Physicians do not and cannot pay to be named to the “Top Doctors” or “Super Doctors” directory, unlike other guides that claim to represent excellent physicians.

"It’s an honor and a privilege to be among the physicians chosen for the ‘Top Doctors’ and ‘Super Doctors’ guides. It’s an indication that we are achieving our goal of providing quality care to patients in a supportive setting," said Dr. Fleckner, a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. His credentials include completion of a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, a Harvard Medical School affiliate.

Dr. Fleckner is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Medical Association. He is affiliated with Winthrop University Hospital and Mercy Medical Center. He has shared his expertise with other doctors, lecturing to medical groups on diabetic eye diseases, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment and other topics.
